Social Circus at C3
About Circus Up
We are thrilled to be joining forces with the Circus Up Team, led by Executive Director Leah Abel, LCSW, to support the effort to make circus more inclusive, accessible, and joyful for all. Founded in 2014, Circus Up uses circus arts to overcome social barriers and build community with people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
Circus Up partners with schools and community centers throughout the greater Boston area including the Hernandez School, Walden Street School, and Brookview House. Circus Up also has a performance-focused youth community troupe, Kirkos! Founded in 2020, Kirkos is a team of youth circus artists who perform bold and uplifting shows in the greater Boston area. In the tradition of “social circus,” the Troupe practices and performs together for the purpose of celebrating what it looks like to courageously learn, play, and create together. Learn about all of Circus Up’s programming here.
We are excited to offer some of the Circus Up programs a home in our studio and community! C3 also collaborates with Circus Up on a scholarship program (link coming soon!), community events, and partner classes (with some C3 students and some Circus Up students). We are thrilled to be working together, creating a model for other schools on how to have a strong partnership integrating recreational circus and social circus.
If you are interested in supporting Social Circus more in your community, please consider making a one-time or monthly donation with Circus Up HERE.
We are inspired by Audre Lorde who famously said, “Without community, there is no liberation…but community must not mean a shedding of our differences, nor the pathetic pretense that these differences do not exist.”
