Coach

Alexis Hedrick

Alexis is a passionate and versatile circus artist and coach. Having decided to become an elephant rider in Barnum & Bailey when she grew up, Alexis Hedrick left competitive gymnastics and began her circus training with Splash Circus in Oakland, CA at age 10. Although there were no elephants, she fell in love with acrobatics, aerials, juggling, and clowning. She went on to learn traditional Chinese acrobatics with Master Lu Yi and tour California with the San Francisco Circus Center youth circus. While completing a Bachelor in Psychology and French at Vassar College, Alexis dove into choreographing and directing her own shows with the college’s circus troupe. She went on to study at the National Institute of Circus Arts in Melbourne, Australia where she specialized in aerial rope, cyr wheel, and comedy acrobatics.

Alexis has performed all around the world with P&O Australia Cruises, Shanghai Circus, GOP Variete, AIDA Cruises, and All Wheel Sports, and she frequently performs locally with the Boston Circus Guild. In 2020, Alexis co-founded Circus 617 and is developing new work with fellow Boston circus artists and educators Sophia Herscu, Ellen Waylonis, Rachel Barringer, and Mandy Hackman. All along her journey, she has enjoyed teaching and sharing her love of circus with people of all ages and backgrounds. Alexis has been thrilled to be part of the Boston circus community since 2015, bringing her knowledge and passion to Commonwealth Circus Center and sister school, Esh Circus Arts.

Teaching Bio from Alexis

In my classes I largely focus on technique– healthy body mechanics, building strong foundations– and on encouraging students to understand the theory behind the skills– why they work, how they relate and connect to other skills. I love when students ask questions and I love ‘aha!’ moments!
